Overseas Mediclaim Policy

As per the 2012 data, there are around 20 million Indians who are living outside the country. It is only natural there would be parents and relatives travelling from India to visit them.  These trips aim at visiting children, grandchildren and relatives and going on sightseeing trips along with them. Apart from these, there is also the middle class Indian, taking his 'foreign tour' with his family. All in all a joyous time spent together. There is an estimated 15 million Indians who travel abroad as tourists.

But these overseas trips come with its own dangers. Climatic changes, food habits, the stress and strain of travel can often take a toll on even the healthiest individuals not to mention the young children. Medical treatments are expensive outside India as evidenced by the number of medical tourists coming to India. Even a small aliment such as a fever can derail your trip and leave you cash starved.

There is an easy solution to protect ourselves while travelling overseas. It is just that most of us treat it as an additional unwanted expense. Overseas medi-claim protects you against your medical requirements while you are outside the Indian Territory. It comes with additional covers like personal accident and disablement, lost baggage, loss of passport and third party property and bodily injury. The biggest advantage of this policy is that premium is paid in Indian Rupees and claims are settled in foreign currency, usually in US Dollars. Claims services would be available from an international claims settler, who has more acceptances in the said country than the insurer from India.

There are several sum insured options available depending upon the country of your visit. In case of  US and Canada, the sum insured available is $5lakhs. In case of family cover the sum insured chosen floats across the family members. Usually these overseas policies are available for a period of 180 days. However, it can be extended before the expiry of the policy by declaring good health.

For travellers above the age of 60 years medical check up has to be done before the policy incepts. All pre-existing disease would be excluded from the coverage of the policy.

This policy can be taken by anyone who is travelling abroad for the purpose of business and holiday, corporate frequent traveller, study and employment.
