Non Resident Indian Accident Insurance

Accidents are not location specific and where ever we are, the chances of an accident occurring is the same. As per the 2012 data published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 2 crores of Non Resident Indians are living across the global. These include those living with and without their  families. Most of us though living abroad has our roots firmly in India and with the extended family still in India, wish to come back at some point of time or other.

NRI accident insurance is specifically designed to cover individuals against personal accident risks with provisions for reimbursement of actual expenses as a result of death of the insured in a foreign country due to accident. It also includes expenses incurred for transportation of the mortal remains of the insured to India. The first applicant/ insured should be an NRI. This policy can be extended to the Insured's spouse and children living abroad or in India. Family members in the age group of 5 years and 70 years can be covered. In case of family coverage, family discounts will be offered.

The first precondition of this policy is that at the time of taking this policy the insured should be in India. The benefits offered under this policy are death due to accident cover, permanent total disablement, loss of limbs and/or eyes due to accident. In case of death and permanent total disablement, the nominee would be paid the full sum insured. In case of loss of limbs and/or eyes 50% of the sum insured would be paid under this policy.

Along with the above mentioned benefits additional benefits like the actual cost of air tickets for the injured insured and the to and fro ticket cost of one accompanying person would be paid. Education fund for dependent children is an additional benefit. Medical expenses subject to a limit would be payable if the accident occurs in India.

Under this policy there are three options for Sum Insured- Rs 3, 5, and 10 lakhs. If the proposer and the spouse are employed abroad, then both can choose the same sum insured. Otherwise the sum insured chosen for resident employed spouse should be lower than that of the insured. In case of  non earning spouses and children, the lowest sum insured, that is, Rs 3 lakhs can be chosen as the sum insured.

The next time you come to India for vacation, make it a point to take an NRI Accident Cover and protect your loved once in your absence.
